Good afternoon Dogwood and Cedar families,

This week Dogwood and Cedar learned about friendship and some necessary skills to build friendships.  The children learned how to greet one another with smiles and high fives.  The children learned how to ask for hugs, help, and also how to trade toys with each other.

During small circle the children sang “The More we get Together” and “Skidamarink,” among others.  The children are also helping sing hello to their friends by name!

The children read Little Dinos Don’t Hit, a great story about using helping hands instead which is a great friendship skill.  They also read Llama Llama and the Bully Goat and Llama Llama Time to Share.  Sharing is really a tough thing for anyone to do, but especially toddlers.  Taking turns and playing together is the focus for the friendship skills unit.

The children worked on their large motor skills when throwing bean bags into baskets, trying out more yoga poses, and playing “Ring around the Rosie” (a cooperative game).  On Friday morning the children enjoyed P.E. with Ms. Kira.  The children practiced rolling and handing a ball to each other, walked on footprints, and danced with scarves to piano music.

Practical life skills were used when the children participated in the name game, practiced pouring water between small cups, taking turns with a ball, and rocking baby dolls.

During art the children made handprints for a fall colored friendship wreath.  The children also rolled a textured ball back and forth through paint to make a group painting.  The children also explored with play dough and sand in the sensory table.

During music with Ms. Kathleen the children played bells and shaker eggs. The children also danced to the song “Rainbow Train,” which stops at different colors which they tried to find in the classroom.
