Dear River Families,
We had another busy week in Kindergarten! We welcomed Ms. Kira back to River and began our unit on apples and autumn! Centers this week included making a book of colors and creating A-M letter sound books. Each group met with me for a special lesson on “reading strategies” and the children worked with a pair to build sight words with magnetic letters and the movable alphabet. The class read the book, “I Love School”, and made a writing and illustration about something they like at school as a part of our being a writer program. In Math this week we matched objects to numbers, continued working on writing numbers and introduced reading and making graphs.
We did all things apples this week! We dissected an apple and identified all the different parts including the skin, flesh, core, stem and seeds. The children counted apples, illustrated their own apples and made applesauce as a class. For our peace lesson this week, the children worked on letting their love light shine and recognizing when their love light is not shining. The children have been enjoying conversation cards. This is where I give each pair a picture of something and they make up a story about what is happening, what happens next and how it ends. This is a great oral language activity! Shares continue next week with the children bringing in their favorite books!
Please return book bags (with books inside), folders and backpacks every Monday! Pattern books can easily be memorized so it is important to work with you child on this. Please help them by asking them to identify sight words, “decode” not guess and point to every word while reading. To decode, I ask the children to identify the letter sounds and then slide. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me for more information! Many children have expressed interest in their parents joining them for lunch! Please chose only two special days a year to join your child for lunch and let us know beforehand so we can arrange food, utensils and room at the tables (our classroom is very small). Thank you!
