This week in Forest, we finished our play theme of restaurants! Forest children pretended to be workers and customers of the ice cream shop, the coffee shop, the breakfast diner, the pizza parlour, the sit-down restaurant, and the drive through one last time before we move on to a new unit.

This week, we also introduced our next play theme of “Pet Vet”. We discussed what animals can be pets, what kind of pets children have from our classroom, and what needs different pets may have. Over the next few weeks, Forest will have centers such as veterinarian office, groomer, pet shop, animal rescue shelter, animal control, and obedience school. Children will pretend play as workers and customers and learn new vocabulary and problem solving skills through their play!

In literacy, this week, Forest children practiced their emerging reading skills through buddy reading with each other. They also participated in read-alouds using some old favorites, such as Little Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. Children have been practicing retelling stories to each other and extending the story.

In math and science this week, children played new games with partners to practice their number recognition and one-to-one correspondence skills. Children work together to count and add objects and check each other’s work through math games. This month in science, we will also take a closer look at winter animals and what they do during the cold!
