Dear River Families,

This week in River we continued learning about the continents and the oceans of earth! Your child is learning characteristics of each continent, labeling maps of the world, and learning about how the proximity to the equator impacts climate. We continued our unit on the human body focusing on bones and muscles! In centers this week your child labeled objects with the moveable alphabet, made different words by changing ending sounds and played a game with dice labeled b/d in order to facilitate the difference between these two very similar lower case letters. Ask your child at home about the “bed” fist trick. Your child was given a lesson on the parts and use of a desktop computer this week. Believe it or not, with modern technology like smart phones and tablets, most children are not familiar with computers. They were given a lesson on how to type a note to someone, print it and even how to search for something!

                In Math this week we jumped further into geometry, used tangrams to create art and played a shape card game. Our being a writer this week continued working on list making and instructional writings. Your child is currently completing “how to” writings. I encouraged your child to think about when they have seen lists or instructional writings at home (recipes, directions driving, grocery lists, and more).  We acted out a fictional Arctic literacy piece about an Inuit family and explored the animals of the Arctic! In art, this week Ms. Emily continued working with the children on mountain landscapes and self-portraits.

Thank you for taking the time to log into the website to stay updated with Kindergarten events. We will be on academic break on Monday due to BVSD closure for MLK. However, we will still celebrate diversity and peace Monday and the entirety of the week. The WOW! Museum will be here for a special workshop with Kindergarten on Thursday 1/26. Please make sure to write the title (for my records) and your signature that your child read their book over the weekend. If you have a child beginning to bring home more challenging books, you do not need to listen to your child read the book in its entirety nor do they have to complete the book over the weekend (chapter books).
