Happy Spring!
This month in PE the children in Birch-River have been learning about healthy foods. Using My Plate, the replacement of the food pyramid and which illustrates the building blocks of a healthy meal, the children have been introduced to the five food groups: lean protein, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy. We looked at how our lunches at Treehouse Learning incorporate all the components of a healthy meal as laid out on My Plate. The children explored fruits and vegetables in detail and then played a game where they had to freeze on a food and declare what food group it belonged to. In Aspen and Birch, the children focused on differentiating between fruits and vegetables.
In Cedar and Dogwood, the children have been working on throwing using bean bags. They have also used bean bags to identify different body parts by placing the bean bag on the stated body part, i.e. “put your bean bag on your elbow.” The children have also been rolling a ball to each other, balancing on a tight rope, and jumping from “lily pad” to “lily pad.”
