Art – April 28, 2017

Hello Treehouse Families!

This Spring has been wonderful!  I hope you all enjoyed seeing your children’s artwork in the Annual Treehouse Art Show, I know that they were all so proud and happy to show you their hard work.  Thank you for your continued support!

Evergreen & Forest:

The students of Evergreen and Forest have explored making 2 and 3D paper creations by making paper connections: folding paper ends to form tabs – a unique way to create a solid connection point to glue.  They came up with ideas as they twisted paper, accordion folded paper, and layered paper resulting in 2 and 3 dimensional works of art that were based on their personal relevance.  They also got to use paper tubes as a material which spurred a variety of thought provoking challenges and inventions!

Most recently students explored observational drawing.  We talked about what “observation” means – to look at something.  I brought in one of their tricycles which was a very exciting topic of conversation.  We talked about why and how we might draw the tricycle.  I asked students to look hard at the tricycle to see if they can spot any shapes.  They saw 19 circles of various sizes and locations, curvy and diagonal tubes, rounded triangles, curvy petal attachments, a heart shapes seat, a half of a hexagon with a circle cut out, and a bumpy, rough rectangle to put feet!  The students started their drawing by identifying one shape that they would start with and then another and another.  Before I knew it the kids were adding grass, colors, butterflies, hurricanes, and all sorts of fun stories of their bikes at home or experiences they had on bikes or tricycles in other places!

Kindergarten:

I hope all of the River families got a chance to visit the Louisville Public Library to see their children’s artwork displayed for their Annual Spring Art Show!  It was quite lovely!  Also, thank you to all families for attending the Treehouse Annual Spring Performance and Art Show!  The students worked very hard in art class this year and it showed!

The Kindergarteners made their Ocean Headdresses in art class.  They researched their animals and planned their design and materials.  The students took 3 art periods to make their headdresses, working to make them realistic and helping each other when a peer needed assistance.

Most recently the students have been working on re-used paper projects of their own interpretation.  We discussed “Why re-use materials?”, the students knew very well that re-using materials keeps trees alive and out of the dump!  We also talked about, “What is charcoal?” as a segue to drawing with charcoal.  We talked about the process of burning wood to make charcoal etc. They planned designs and materials, and then created unique artworks of their own invention.  We are continuing these projects.

In a week I will be asking students to bring ‘add-ins’ for a recycled paper project.  These can be petals, leaves, string – anything you might see in an artisan paper.  These are not required, but keep your ears open as your children may want help in gathering supplies.
