March 2

Dear River Families,

We began an author study on Dr. Seuss this week and celebrated Read Across America on Dr.Seuss’ birthday by working with rhyming words, silly words and reading some of his famous works. Ms. Patti gave us a special visit to read two Dr. Seuss books! Centers this week included building rhyming words with the moveable alphabet, making Dr. Seuss Cat in the Hat hats, and researching our animals for Spring Performance. The children loved hearing the story, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck”, and making their own sticky green oobleck and then recording scientific observations.

Math this week included working with number bonds 11-20. The children used their 10 squares and counting bears to discover equations starting with 10 (ex. 10+_=?). Ms. Kathleen showed the children the inside of the piano, played the guitar and accordion. Our Good Kind Deed Tree is blooming! The children dedicated one flower each day to an act of kindness that they did for another child or teacher. We began working on Spring Performance songs! We are full swing working on Spring Performance and will be working on making a set, writing poems to be performed and creating head-dress style animal hats for their costumes in art class. Parents will be responsible for creating the body part of the costume and facilitating in the child memorizing their lines and poems.

Please have the body of your costume at school by Tuesday, April 3rd. This do not have to be extravagant! For example; if your child is a crab, they could wear red leggings, a red shirt and the crab hat ßthey will make here at school.

This week we began our share about community workers and leaders.  We began studying different jobs/professions and described what this person does, what materials or tools they use and where they work such as; mail carriers, police officer, doctor, farmer firefighter and mayor. Alternatively, they can choose a historical leader or figure such as a president or professional athlete. This share requires some research or “homework”. Please have your child draw a picture and write a sentence or some facts about who their choice is and why they are important. Poems and script will be sent home in the middle of March to work on being memorized. Also next week on Thursday-3/8, we will have our second field trip to visit the library.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Lauren
