Dear River Families,

This week in Kindergarten, we learned more about the Milky Way Galaxy! The children viewed the International Space Station, learned about the universe and began a study on each planet. I have assigned each child (or pair of children) a planet that they made and will continue to study for the next few weeks. We will perform for Evergreen and Forest a “space mini-play”, where each planet has a small poem describing it! The children will work to remember their line and work as a team to perform. We had our second buddy read in which the children take turns with a pair to read their assigned books and read this book independently on Friday. I want to reiterate that sometimes pattern books are naturally memorized by the child or the book sent home will be seen as too “easy”.  This is an intentional selection for your child for confidence and for building reading strategies such as decoding letter sounds, sliding and inferring from illustrations. By the time the book reaches home, the book has been read 1 on 1 with me, to a buddy and independently and the goal is for the child to show off to you what they have practiced. Thank you for your cooperation with our reading program!

Centers this week included continuing space exploration, letter chants and handwriting letters L-S, and listening to a story about friendship.  Math this week continued working on critical thinking, matching items that belong together and identifying objects that do not belong in a group for one reason or another such as shape or color. We began our writing program by identifying what each child might be interested in writing about! We read two poems about a child who can jump, hop, skip and flip! We discussed what we can do with our bodies and picked one thing to illustrate and write. After the children finished their work they began labeling their artwork with beginning sounds. This fantastic work can be found in your child’s finished folder!

We ended the week with a visit from Beth Epley. Next week we will continue learning about space and welcome fall on Thursday! Our first field trip with be on October 20th to Isabelle Farms pumpkin patch! Next week we start our new share topic. Your child is asked to bring in one thing that starts with the same letter as their name. Please prepare your child to provide 3 details about the object. Have a great weekend!

Best,

Ms. Stephanie
