June 22

Dear Forest Families,

It has been an exciting and busy week.  The kindergarten students went on a field trip to the library, the Arvada center visited, the class was introduced to a new unit and more!

This week’s focus – Colorado animals.  On Monday, the kindergarten students visited the library and picked up books on native Colorado animals.  The class has learned about many animals native to Colorado including animals such as buffalo, moose, elk, squirrels, bears, and raccoons.  The buffalo have especially interested many students.  The students were also introduced to a matching game where they pair up different types of Colorado animals.

Incorporating the theme of Colorado animals, a camp site was set up for the children.  The camp site includes a tent, a river with fish for the children to catch, a fire to roast smores on, and binoculars to look out for Colorado wildlife.

On Wednesday, the Arvada Center did a presentation on the story, Beautiful Oops.  After listening to the story and learning that there aren’t really any mistakes when it comes to art the children learned you can use materials creatively to turn “mistakes” into beautiful pieces of art with a little creativity.  After the story, the class got to create their own artwork using newspaper, crayons, and watercolors.

Another exciting thing happened on Thursday.  The caterpillars, after hanging in their chrysalises for most of the week emerged!  The children were lucky enough to see some of this occur and have been watching as the Painted Lady butterflies dried their wings and began to move around their habitat.  It was exciting to see the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly!  The children also enjoyed watching the butterflies use their proboscis to drink the nectar from the pineapple slices and sugar water provided!

The class has continued to enjoy outdoor work time and have become very creative.  One activity that became popular this week was the bike wash.  The children created a bike wash station and used scrub brushes and wash clothes to clean and dry the bikes!

Next week – Birds of Prey, with a special visit on Friday and a Field Trip to the fountains at Festival Plaza on Tuesday.  Please remember to check your parent files for permission slips!

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Melissa, Ms. Kira, Ms. Jess, Ms. Lauren
