Dear River Families,

We had a great week in Kindergarten as the children are adjusting to the new environment.  Thank you for attending back to school night! The children loved the idea of showing their parents around the room! This week we began studying the Five Senses and went on a senses hunt outside. The children went with a buddy around our playground and felt different textures, explored the different smells of nature, tasted peppermint from our garden, and sat in silence to focus on looking and listening to their surroundings. We read books about sight and did a study on the part of an eye. The children constructed their own eyes in an art project and labeled the parts of the eye. Centers this week included matching upper case letters to lower case letters, going on a detective hunt around the room for letters, using picture cards to sequence events, building letters with playdough, playing a sound game with “popcorn” and sorting classifications of animals. I met with each Literacy group and began writing and working with letter sounds A-F. Ms. Charlotte worked with small groups matching words to pictures and matching objects to letter sounds. We started one of my favorite folktales, “A Frog Went A-Traveling”, in our Jr. Great books and illustrated a scene from the story. We will continue working with this folktale next week.

In Math this week we matched objects with complex patterns and discussed and identified the difference between objects being similar and exactly alike. We identified different colors around our classroom, matched colored objects in our work books, and labeled colors in a picture with the first sound in the color (ex. g for green grass), some students were challenged to write all of the sounds they hear.  Ms. Kira started a unit with the children on food groups and we will continue this unit over the next month. Ms. Charlotte continued peace lessons and introduced the, “Good Kind Deed Tree”! When the children complete a good kind deed, a flower is put on our tree to represent this kind deed. We discussed the difference between what is a good kind deed and what is an expectation. For example, if you clean your spot after lunch or do your helping hands jobs, that is not a good kind deed. If your friend accidentally spills their pencil box and you help them clean it up, that is a good kind deed!

We start shares next week! Share bags will be on your child’s hook the afternoon before they share to take home. Please BRING SHARE BAG BACK THE NEXT DAY to share and so we can continue the rotation of shares. Have a great long weekend!

Thank you,

Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Kira
