Good afternoon Dogwood and Cedar families,

This week Dogwood and Cedar learned about their families.  The children looked at the family pictures and talked about all the mommies, daddies, siblings, grandparents, and animals portrayed.  The children sang songs about families such as “The Thumbkins,” “B-I-N-G-O” (dogs are family too), and the finger play “Grandma’s Glasses” which also talks about grandpa.  The children read Llama Llama Misses Mama, Is Your Mama a Llama? and What Daddies do Best.

The children worked on their large motor skills when they tried out some new yoga moves with cards that show other children in poses that look like flowers, hot air balloons, and bridges.  The children also threw bean bags into a basket, practiced hopping like frogs and rabbits, and ran across the playground.

Practical life skills were used when the children twisted nuts and bolts, poured water and other small objects into cups, and used different scoops to scoop small objects.  Scooping is one of the favorite practical life works and it teaches the children the muscles to use when using eating utensils.  With practice, the children will be able to use their utensils very well at mealtime.

During art the children painted with feathers and used bingo dabbers, as well as crayons, at the easel.  The children explored with play dough, seashells, sand, and water in the sensory tables.

During music with Ms. Kathleen the children sang along with “Driving my Tractor” and listened to farm animal sounds.  The children also tapped various body parts with shaker eggs to the rhythm of the music.
