October 7

Dear River Families,

This week in River we had our 30th day of school and welcomed October! The children completed a writing sample that I will keep to compare growth in later months. We wrapped up our apple study and began focusing more on the four seasons and pumpkins! The children discussed with each other what they wear, what activities they enjoy and what the weather is like in each season, followed by a journal entry. Centers this week included making an apple story, finishing a book of letter sounds and listening to a story about autumn changes. Math this week included writing numerals and matching quantities to numbers.

We completed a riddle and studies a few poems in our Jr. Great Books. One of our favorite activities was reading an Apache poem and completing a “mural” depicting dawn over the mountains. October is fire safety month! We discussed fire safety and completed a weekly reader. Health and Nutrition this week included learning about the food groups and making food sorting cards. Ms. Kathleen continued to work with the children on reading music including note identification and tempo.  Ms. Megan had the children complete their version of the impressionist painting, “Castle in the Sky”. Please return book bags (with books inside), folders and backpacks every Monday! Pattern books can easily be memorized so it is important to work with you child on this. Please help them by asking them to identify sight words, “decode” not guess and point to every word while reading. To decode, I ask the children to identify the letter sounds and then slide. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me for more information!

Many children have expressed interest in their parents joining them for lunch! Please chose only two special days a year to join your child for lunch and let us know beforehand so we can arrange food, utensils and room at the tables (our classroom is very small). For our upcoming field trip to the pumpkin patch, I already have 2 volunteers to walk with the class. I need one more volunteer to drive to the pumpkin patch and help us by driving the pumpkins the children select back to Treehouse. Let me know if you are interested! Please make sure your child has appropriate shoes for outdoor play, wet grass and especially for P.E on Mondays. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Kira
