January 27

This week in Forest, children took on many roles through their play in the Pet Vet centers. We read books about wild animals being transported through Animal Control, pets that were bought from pet stores and animal shelters, vets who took care of sick animals, animals who had to get groomed, and dogs who were trained at obedience school. Children are working together to play out many scenarios as they use new language.

This week in literacy centers, children practiced reading and retelling stories with friends. We have been reading old favorites and some new fairy tales with a twist. Forest children loved The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig as well as The True Story of the Three Little Pigs. After reading, children practiced retelling stories through manipulatives and pictures to help them remember.

In math this week, children played number and shape games in small groups. They practiced making shapes to match pictures using rubber bands, they practiced one-to-one correspondence by using counters, they practiced basic addition with a dice game, and they practiced counting using units of ten.

Forest children also enjoyed making art projects this week for the pet vet centers. Children measured out ingredients to make play dough, after which they cut out animals using cookie cutters. Children helped make animals for the pet shop as well. They used egg cartons to make turtles and paper to make hanging bird cages. Next week, we will continue our unit on pet vet!

Have a great weekend!
