March 3

Good afternoon Aspen families.

As we enter March we are enjoying new topics like nutrition and health. This week we had the opportunity to learn about nutritional foods. We enjoyed many large group activities which discussed: fruits and vegetables, healthy foods and non-healthy foods, listening for the sound of “f” for fruit and “v”for vegetables.  We also talked about different food groups.

During our  small group  activities we have had the opportunity to engage in many fun filled creations. Aspen created a self-portrait and filled our bellies with the different foods we like to eat, children painted with various fruits and vegetables which included starfruit, peppers, lemons, limes, apples and celery. The Aspen children had time to work with scissors and practice cutting by searching for different food groups in magazines and pasting them to paper plates.

During our work period this week the children enjoyed washing dishes in the water table, cutting play-dough  with pizza cutters, letter matching and memory with the bear matching game. Aspen explored letters and name writing on the whiteboards and chalkboards. Some of the books we read this week surrounding food include: Dragons Love Tacos, Green Eggs and Ham, An Apple a Day,  Vegetables in Underwear and Peanuts for Peanut Butter.  To support our health unit, we incorporated more movement activities into this week’s lessons. This includes more vigorous movement activities like dancing, pretending to be different animals, playing nursery rhyme games outside and having various races.

In Music the children listened to the song Knick-Knack Patty Wack and played maracas to various new songs. Miss Kathleen has been introducing Aspen to one new instrument each week and discussing the different instrumental groups and identifying the sounds they make.
During Literacy group the children read The Nose Book and talked about noses. They also read Dr. Seuss books and played I Spy, listening for beginning sounds.  In P.E with Ms. Kira the children played Red Light-Green Light, they practiced balancing on the rope, and running laps around the tree.
And finally, in High-scope math group this week the children used dice to count the dots on the dice and go grocery shopping for that amount of fruits and vegetables.  Too much fun!
Have a wonderful weekend,

Ms. Candice, Ms, Kate, Ms, Megan, Ms. Claire
