Good afternoon Evergreen families!

This week in Evergreen, we learned all about earthworms! A dozen earthworms joined the classroom to teach the children about how worms make the soil healthy, and how they help plants grow. When worms tunnel through the soil they allow air and water to go deeper into the earth to be soaked up by the roots of plants. Worms eat dead plants, animals, and insects above and below the ground, and make the soil healthier as they poop. The children were able to hold and examine the worms up close as they worked in the sensory table. They noticed the segments as they watched the worms stretch and move through the soil. The children were able to identify the clitellum (where the eggs come from) on some of the worms, and learned that worms need to stay moist because they breathe through their skin. The children were gentle and careful as they dug beneath the soil, turning it over, as they looked for the burrowing worms.

The rain and snow this week gave us a lot of opportunities to practice movement with dancing and games. We worked on building the strength and balance in our bodies by stretching, supporting weight while upside down, practicing swimming movements, hopping on one foot, and dancing. The children played musical chairs with cards, and practiced identifying numbers on the cards when the music stopped. They pretended to be animals as they moved through animal actions.

This week in math, we worked on measuring bodies and body parts. Who is the tallest person? Who has the longest fingers? How long is your foot or neck? The children used string, rulers, and a tape measure to find answers to their measurement questions.

Hopefully next week will give us some warm, snow-less weather so we can plant our garden. Have a great weekend!
