This Week in Forest

Dear Forest Families,

This week in Forest the children enjoyed playing in the leaves. They learned how to use the rakes to make piles of leaves. The children worked as a team to pile the leaves, and lined themselves up to take turns jumping. When they exhausted the fun of jumping they worked together to bury each other in the leaves. It was great fall fun!

This week for science, the children explored pumpkins. We cut open pumpkins, and the children had the opportunity to see, smell, and touch the inside of the pumpkin. Some children helped take the “guts” out of the pumpkin, and some noticed the classroom smelled like pumpkin after it was open. At the end of the week, the groups voted on how they would like their pumpkin carved. Check out the jack-o-lanterns in the classroom. Ms. Suzanne mixed science and art together, and gave a lesson on how to make apple prints.

For Story Extensions, Ms. Jess read the story A Leaf Can Be. After listening to the story, the children made their own story extensions, and drew a picture of what a leaf can be. Some children added a message to their picture. Many children also made leaf rubbing pictures.

Everyone was very excited about having their picture taken! The morning was full of compliments, as the children noticed how handsome or beautiful their friends looked in their picture clothes. They put on their biggest smiles, and are excited for the day they will see how their pictures turned out.

As we continue reading the book What Does It Mean To Be Kind, we have noticed behaviors and the language in the classroom beginning to change. In previous weeks, the children often talked about things happening that they didn’t like. They have begun to talk to each other about helpful and kind things that are happening in the classroom (“She showed me how to make a crown.” “He helped me build a house.” “I helped clean up the art table, even though I didn’t work there.” “I put the paper in the recycling!”).

Have a wonderful weekend!

The Forest Team,

Ms. Jess, Ms. Becky, Ms. Suzanne, Ms. Freya, and Ms. Riann
