Dear Forest Families,
This week in Forest the children have been working on making props to add to the police station and fire station. Two children brought dogs (stuffed) in so there is a police dog and fire dog. They have been discussing how they can build an obstacle training course for the dogs. The children are interested in doing some research about what a fire dog does at the fire station. Some of the children helped build a police car. They painted the car, made wheels, and designed a license plate. The children even learned how to investigate a crime scene, and make fingerprints.
Also this week, the children learned how community helpers (police officers, firemen, and doctors) can work together. The teachers modeled how these roles can come together in an emergency, and the children have begun to combine the play centers for different situations. In the doctor’s office, the children were introduced to x-rays. They are able to put the x-rays on the light table, to see more clearly, and match words of the bones they see, such as rib cage or skull.
Finally, the children have been busy making cards for friends and family. There are several birthdays in the classroom this month, and many children have other family members with birthdays this month. The children have been very focused on listening to letter sounds, and figuring out which letter will make the word. The pieces are coming together, as they get more involved with play planning, and focus more on their written message.
The Forest teachers are having a lot of fun seeing how the children are growing in their academic skills, their play and social skills, as well as how they generate ideas for their play areas.
Have a great weekend!
The Forest Team,
Ms. Riann, Ms. Jess, Ms. Freya, Ms. Becky, and Ms. Suzanne
