Hello Aspen families,
This week the children have been learning all about Valentine’s Day and creating the color pink! We couldn’t resist going for a nature walk on Thursday, the weather was so beautiful and we were able to make a nice long loop around the neighborhood. Then on Friday the kids were excited to welcome Ms. Beth Epley and listen to her fun stories and songs.
In circle this week we read the books Pink, The Best Thing About Valentine’s, The Grumpy Valentine, If You’ll Be My Valentine, and Valentine’s Day Mess. The week began with a hunt for the color pink and a discussion about how we can create the color pink by mixing white and red. We also discussed with the children how Valentine’s Day is a day to celebrate friends and the people we love. We talked about some ways to celebrate these people, including making cards for them, spending time with them, telling them you love them or giving them a hug. Throughout the week the art shelf was stocked with materials for making valentines, including folded paper for cards, stickers, heart and tissue paper.
The class worked on a couple art projects this week, including a smoosh painting – mixing white and red paints to color a heart pink and a tissue paper sun catcher. The children have just been loving the sensory aspect of the smoosh painting as well as the fine motor work of pulling and tearing tissue paper for their sun catchers and cards. We also introduced a few new works this week including fishing for letters, cutting wooden food, and a zipper frame to practice zipping their jackets.
This week in Spanish Ms. Susan worked with the children on naming their emotions, identifying the weather and counting. And in music this week we worked with rhythm sticks, keeping steady beats and rolling the rhythm sticks in front of our bodies. We also sang Old MacDonald and listened to animal sounds.
Next week we will begin learning about musical instruments and Meet the Instruments with visits from some professional musicians from the Center for Musical Arts. String instruments on Thursday, February 15 and brass/woodwind instruments on Tuesday, February 20th.
