November 9

Dear River Families,

This week in River we continued learning about Native Americans, and we began learning about the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. In Literacy we focused on our writing skills, and learned about the magic e.

In Math this week, we continued working with counting and writing numbers. I asked the children to try and find situations in their everyday life where they might need to use math. I encouraged them to ask YOU if you ever use math in your life/work! We completed a Being a Writer activity this week where the children notice environmental print (example: a stop sign) and wrote about a place that they know. This week we defined what the fundamental needs of humans are and led this into what we are truly thankful for. We spend extra time this week defining the terms kindness, acceptance and gratitude. In our Jr. Great Books we discussed and drew a picture of something that had made us very angry, and what we had done to overcome that anger. We began a unit on physics and engineering and began working as a team to solve problems. For example, instead of just playing ramps, they were asking to work in a small group to create a roller coaster with 1 turn, 1 loop and 1 dip. We also worked in groups to make boats and counted how many pennies the boat could hold before it sunk.

STONE SOUP assignments have been given in your parent files! This is an annual tradition we participate in here at Treehouse to emphasize the importance of community and uniting as one. We will cut vegetables and enjoy stone soup on Thursday 11/15. Treehouse is open 11/19-11/21 however, Kindergarten will be on Academic Break. We will take a break from shares for the next 2 weeks but will resume them after Thanksgiving break.

Sincerely,

Ms. Lauren and Ms. Andrea
