Dear River Families,
We began an author study on Dr. Seuss this week, and worked with rhyming words, silly words and reading some of his famous works. Centers this week included listening to Green Eggs and Ham in the listening center, working on a Dr. Seuss word search, and learning about Timelines. Next Monday is the national Read Across America Day in honor of Dr. Seuss and his books. Take some time to re-visit these books as you read with your child, his writings are delightfully silly, but often has a character lesson embedded.
Math this week included working with number bonds 11-20. Children used the Unifix cubes to work on equations starting with 10 ( ex. 10 + _ =? ).
In music the children were introduced to woodwind and brass instruments on Wednesday and string instruments on Monday from our visiting musicians from the Center for Performing Arts.
Our Good Kind Deed Tree has been blooming. The children dedicate one flower each day to an act of kindness that they did for another child or teacher.
Next week we will begin working on our Spring Performance songs. We will also begin to go full swing into Spring Performance and will be working on making a set, writing poems to be performed. In our art class, the students will be creating head-dress style animal hats for Spring performance over the next 6 weeks. Parents are responsible for creating the body part of the costume and facilitating in the child memorizing their lines and poems. Look for the poems and scripts to be sent home in the middle of March.
Please have the body of your costume at school by Tuesday, April 7. These do not have to be extravagant! For example: if your child is a crab, they could wear red leggings, a red shirt and the crab hat that they will make here at school.
This week we concluded our random letter shares. Thank you for helping your child select such awesome items for this share. The children love sharing with the class!
Next Thursday (March 6) we will have our second Field trip to visit the Lafayette Library.
Have a great weekend!
Ms. Lauren and Ms. Charlotte
