September 9

Dear River Families,

This week in Kindergarten we started our first share topic! The children have been very excited about being able to bring in items to tell their classmates a little bit about themselves. Thank you for your cooperation with this! Literacy centers this week included letter chants and writing f-k, making a 5 senses book and reflecting on a scene from a story at the listening center. We continued learning about the five senses by selecting an item from nature to bring into the room and explore. The children talked to a buddy about how their object looked, smelled, felt and what kind of noises it can make and then reflected with artwork in their journals. We played a game where we had items in a bag and without looking guessed what it was based on sound and touch.  I met with each child this week to select their first book and they were introduced to buddy reading and SQIRT (Sustained Quiet Independent Reading Time).  Children will start with books of all ranges, some being pattern books used to gain confidence and encourage the children to infer from illustrations. Please encourage your child to point to every word as they read! Books will be sent home Friday in a bag and are asked to be returned in backpack along with their emptied folders. Please write the title of the book read and sign that you have read with your child!

Math this week included matching items that go together and identifying an object in a group that does not belong. Peace Lessons this week included using the medicine wheel to identify two roads that we walk on in life; the road of difficulties and challenges and the road of peace. In Music we continued learning how to play quarter notes and rests while playing the boom whackers.  We continued working with the story, “The Frog Went A-Traveling”, in our Jr. Great Books! Don’t forget to sign in/out and check your parents file daily! On a different note, Ms. Kira will be out until the end of September and Ms. Charlotte will be spending a little extra time in our classroom.

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Stephanie
