Good afternoon Evergreen families!
This week in Evergreen the children celebrated the pumpkin patch. We read The Pumpkin Patch, and discussed the life cycle of a pumpkin. They explored gourds in science, and compared the size of seeds from small gourds and large pumpkins. The children practiced storytelling as they worked with felt board pieces to design a fall scene. The children finger painted pumpkins using yellow and red paint. Some children chose to draw faces, patterns, or put hand prints on their painted pumpkins. The children practiced counting and number recognition by adding foam seeds to pumpkin cutouts.
In math, the children are learning about patterns. They have been very excited about finding patterns in their environment, whether it’s a plaid shirt or vines in the pumpkin patch.
Our social/emotional lessons this week included stories and discussions about boys and girls choosing any activity that interests them. These discussions involved sports, clothing, and play activities. Children like to put order to their world by grouping things together, and they begin to define their capabilities within these groups. For some children, this can make it hard to want to try new things or may diminish their desire to practice a certain skill. During our Meet Up we have been reading stories that illustrate boys and girls trying and practicing all kinds of skills, and encouraging each other to practice all of the activities that interest them.
Next week, we will be celebrating Halloween on Monday. As we move into the month of November, the children will learn about North American Culture/Customs, including the discovery of America and Native American culture.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Ms. Riann, Ms. Lindsey, Ms. Suzan, Ms. Suzanne, and Ms. Becky
