December 16

Dear River Families,

This week in River we read different versions of the “Gingerbread Man” and discussed similarities and differences between the versions. The children then made their own gingerbread men and women that we baked and enjoyed the next day. Centers this week included reading a poem in our Jr. Great Books and writing our own poems about a season. The children have been working on poetry in our writing program as well. We read about animals and created poems that included facts about these animals. Our second center included making a, “Five Frosty Snowmen” book and the third was listening to, “The Trouble with Trolls”, and writing a fact about Jan Brett in their journals. The children love being able to look at two books and identify which one is written by Jan Brett based off the characteristics of her illustrations.

In Math, this week we introduced geometry concepts and have been recognizing shapes in our environment.  This week in science the children continued working with engineering and we learned more about winter mammals. Your child has a special gift for you and your family! They have worked weeks on completing this project and preparing it to come home. Make sure to get it out of you parent file!

I was so impressed with the commitment by the children to Santa Lucia. This is a Swedish tradition including a beautiful procession through the school. The children held candles and delivered treats to each class, sang a beautiful arrangement of Santa Lucia to each room and the oldest girl in the class (Charlie) was our Santa Lucia.  Next week we are on academic break and Treehouse is closed the following week of 12/19. Please enjoy your winter break and safe travels! We will see you in the new year when class resumes on Tuesday, 1/3.

Cheers,

Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Kira
