January 13

Good afternoon Dogwood and Cedar families,

This week Dogwood and Cedar learned about their amazing bodies.  The children learned body parts through song, such as “Head, Shoulder, Knees, and Toes” which they sang in English and Spanish, and “The Hokey Pokey.”  The children explored their auditory senses by singing “The Itsy-Bitsy Spider” with high and low voices, as well as loud and quiet voices.

The children read The Bear went over the Mountain which details a bear using all his senses to explore the world through spring, summer, and fall before he goes to sleep for the winter.  The children also read Hooray for You!, a celebratory book on individualism and uniqueness, I Can, Can You?, and What can my Ear Hear?  The children also read That’s Not my Duck, as well as others in the series, to feel different textures.

The children worked on their large motor skills when marching, kicking cones, jumping on the grass, and throwing bean bags.  The children also worked on taking turns rolling a ball to each other and walking on lily pads in P.E.

Practical life skills were used when children practiced flipping their jackets and stomping into their boots.  The children used gator grabbers (tweezers) to pick up small buttons and pieces of tissue paper.  The children also worked on cleaning the table.

During art, the children painted with brushes and fingers this week.  Some children enjoy painting with brushes while others prefer their fingers.  The children also used stamp pads for stamps and hand-prints.

The children explored with textured fabric and play dough in the sensory table.  The children noticed the differences in the smooth and bumpy parts of seashells and pine-cones.  The children used their sense of smell while smelling jars of ginger, vanilla extract, garlic powder, and cumin.

During music with Ms. Kathleen the children played shaker eggs and danced with scarves.  The children also galloped like horses and sang their favorite, “La Crocodilla.”

Happy 2nd Birthday to Hawken tomorrow!
