Good day Aspen families!

This week in Aspen we explored the world of animals. In the beginning of the week we discussed the traits of a mammal. Mammals have fur, make milk and have live babies. Children matched mammal tracks to their mammal pictures and to the food they eat. Later in the week children began to understand basic concepts of the difference between mammals and other creatures. Children also explored the difference between fruits and vegetables as they engaged in a sorting and counting game.

During small group lessons Aspen created lion masks, worked on rote counting and marble painted zebras. The children really enjoyed marble painting! They placed their zebra in a box full of black paint and rolled the marbles around in the book to decorate their zebras with black stripes.

This week we read many books which allowed children to identify a variety of mammals, find commonalities among mammals as well as differentiate them from other creatures. Some examples include: Blue Whale Blues, Biggest Strongest Fastest, Who Has These Feet, Charlie the Caterpillar, Who Has This Tail and Secrets of the Vegetable Garden.

During work period this week, children painted on the easel with new art brushes, created animal prints in playdough, worked on snap shot images, worked on pouring using a water tower. As the year progresses Aspen children are beginning to use the work materials in a purposeful way, allowing opportunities for more independent play!

Spanish: Aspen worked on animals, reviewed colors and counting to 20! The children are becoming familiar with the colors and numbers in Spanish when we use them in everyday language.

Music: Aspen danced with shaker eggs, galloped like horses and sang the Johnny Oh song with our hands. We danced every day this week to new songs. The children really enjoy dancing as a group, too cute!

High scope- Children worked on counting bears on a boat and counting friends while in a line – up to 20!

P.E: Aspen had so much fun working with the parachute today! They popped popcorn (small nerf balls) on it and they took turns crawling under the parachute. The children could not get enough of this activity. They also moved their bodies to the stretching song.

A few reminders — we will be playing on the Evergreen preschool playground every Friday from 9:30-10:15. The children really enjoy the Evergreen playground!  When you arrive in the morning, please allow your child to fill up their own water bottle in the sink. They may need some help when taking off the lid, but please encourage them to fill up and replace the lid independently. These type of self-help skills will set them up to be successful as they move up.

Thank you!  Have a good weekend,

Ms. Candice, Ms. Megan, Ms. Kate and Ms. Claire
