Good afternoon Cedar families,

This week the children learned about arctic animals.  The children sang familiar songs about animals, but changed them to be about penguins, foxes, rabbits, and polar bears.  The children read books about winter and arctic animals such as It is Winter, Who is Hiding in the Snow?, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, Polar Bears are Wild!, and The Penguin Chick.

The children worked on their large motor skills while acting like arctic animals.  They practiced waddling like penguins, hopping like rabbits, crawling like bears, and even pretending to float on water like ice.  The children also did some yoga and could hear each other taking deep breaths.  The children and teachers imagined being different animals and holding their bodies in poses that represented each animal.  For example, the children curled up on their knees to be mice.

The children explored with paint ice cubes.  The children could feel the cold while they slid the ice over their black paper.  It took them a couple minutes to decide whether they enjoyed the cold on their hands.  The children also used feathers to paint, explored with play dough, and made bear prints with their hands and feet.

Ms. Kathleen focused on rhythm in music this week.  The children used rhythm sticks while singing and played a drum.
