March 31

Hello I Aspen families!

This was the last week of March and we concluded our topic of spring, plants, bugs and seeds. Aspen was introduced more life-cycles of butterflies and other bugs this week. Aspen viewed various images and books which provided more concrete concepts of how bugs and plants grow, develop and change. We also discussed fruits and vegetables, we then discussed how a fruit is a suitcase for seeds. Children sorted and discovered all fruits have seeds!

We discussed how all butterflies are unique as are people. We discussed the various colors and variation in butterfly characteristics. Children then used this information to create their own unique coffee filter butterfly. Children also created their own apple suitcase for apple seeds. Children used scissors and black paper to cut and create their own apple seeds. They then glued them on to either a red, green or yellow apple. On Thursday the children learned about the parts of a sunflower and created their own sunflower.

This week we read books that included manners as well as books which were related to concepts children were learning. Some favorites were: Please, Mr. Panda, Caterpillar to Butterfly, Fruit are Suitcases for Seeds, Seed Soil Sun, and To Be Like the Sun.

For movement activities this week we played London bridge, practiced balancing on the balance beam, ran races outside and practiced catching large balls. During our work period children planted and took care of artificial flowers in the sensory table. The children loved the opportunity to play on the Evergreen playground again this Friday!

High scope: this week children worked on underhand throws with a beanbag toss activity. Children were that encouraged to count how many beanbags landed in the basket and how many beanbags landed outside of the baskets. Children more than further encouraged to compare the two quantities.

Music: This week in music we saying the Humpty Dumpty song and children used their body to roll around as an egg. Children also played jingle bells and listen to new farm animal sounds.

Spanish: this week children reviewed counting to 20 and household items.

March has been full of wet and wonderful fun! Aspen now will dig into April, as we learn about ways to take care of our Earth. Have a wonderful weekend!
