Good afternoon Evergreen families!

This week in Evergreen the children are learning about seeds and plants. They have looked at many different seeds this week, and noticed that seeds are all different sizes. The children are learning about the parts of plants (roots, stems, leaves, flower, fruit), and have discovered that all plants have the same parts as trees, therefore “trees must be plants”.

For science this week, the children planted seeds in pots with soil, and put some seeds in baggies in the window. They are unable to see what is happening inside the soil, so they can watch the seeds in the baggies as they open, growing roots and shoots. The children have been exploring plants outside, looking closely at the leaves and flowers, and discussing the shapes they see.

There has been a lot of energy in the classroom during morning work time, and we have used that as an opportunity to do some morning exercises. The children have exercised their bodies while running laps, riding bikes, doing push-ups, and bear crawls up the hill. They have been doing yoga poses in the yard, and racing each other up and down the hill, allowing them to focus on their work when they return indoors. 

In literacy, the children are reading a book called How Things Work In The Yard. It explores gardening/yard tools, and plants and animals you may see in the yard. It has opened many discussions about what children see in their yard, how different yards are used in different ways, and how animals use yards in different ways.

Next week we will begin learning about garden helpers, focusing on birds, worms, and pollinators.
