Dear Forest Families,
“Stone Soup is what you need, if you have some friends to feed”. This week the Forest students focused their learning on how to make Stone Soup. The children used props of vegetables to add to the “big soup pot” in the classroom. An extension to this activity had the children matching words to the soup ingredients (bone, onion, peas, corn, etc). In the writing center, the children worked on making recipe books for Stone Soup. This activity also had some children making recipe books for other meals they like, such as pizza or pasta dishes. All of the children contributed items to the Stone Soup Ms. Mary made on Wednesday. It was a delicious feast. Everyone tried the soup, many children ate several bowls of it, but the favorite items to eat was the bread and butter.
This month the classroom curriculum Big Idea is focusing on Native American culture and customs. How did Native Americans in Colorado (and the Southwest) live long ago? How did they connect to the Earth, and each other? These are some of the questions that will be answered as we continue our lessons this month. The children are also being introduced to art, crafts, and games that are part of Native American culture. This week, the children have continued working on their weaving projects, as well as learning to sew. Next week we will learn a bit more about the kind of homes Native Americans lived in, and games that were played.
This time of year is a time for reflection about the things we can all be thankful for in our lives, and finding ways to show gratitude to the people and places around us. This week the children were introduced to the cornucopia, and have been hard at work coloring, cutting, and gluing different cornucopia projects. The discussion surrounding this project has been about what you can do for others when you have plenty. The Native Americans shared with their tribe and others when they had a plentiful harvest. Many of us come together with family and friends at Thanksgiving to share our love and time with each other. This week we opened a card shop in the classroom, and the children have been writing letters and cards to share what they are thankful for. At Treehouse we are thankful that you have chosen us to be a part of your extended family community. How very lucky we are to share the joy of learning with your children.
