February 16

Dear River Families,

It was another busy week in Kindergarten! The children passed out their letters and love notes to one another on Valentine’s Day.  The children enjoyed reading the sweet messages their friends wrote them. In February we celebrate diversity and started off this theme by reading, Children Like Me, and Same, Same, but Different.  We also discussed how there is diversity in families and how all families look different and have different structure. We began studying George Washington and Abraham Lincoln! We discussed what a president does, how they get elected and how it is important to respect that people have different opinions.  The children will continue to learn about presidents Washington and Lincoln through next week.

We also talked about Chinese New Year this week and celebrated the year of the dog! The children in our classroom are mostly born in the year of the dragon and a few are rabbits. They loved receiving red envelopes, eating Chinese treats and making lanterns! Thank you for providing addresses for your child’s letter. They have been working on writing the letters and drawing a picture for the recipient. In Peace lesson the children tried to complete tasks without one of their senses. Example, build a tower big to small while blindfolded.

In music, we had a special visit from The Center for Musical Arts with string instruments, and the children were able to play a bass, cello, and violin! We began working on the computer during centers. Most of the children are not familiar with using a mouse and keyboard. We will continue to build these skills over the next few weeks!

SQIRT (Sustained Quiet Independent Reading Time) transitioned this week into more of an independent activity. The children are now assigned a color bin and select a book of their choice that is not too easy, not too hard but “just right”.

We have a field trip to the library on 2/22 . Your child needs an empty backpack, walking shoes, and a Treehouse t-shirt.  The children will be selecting a book about an animal that they will be studying for the Spring Performance on April 12th. We are CLOSED 2/19 for President’s Day/Teacher in-service day.  See you Tuesday!

Have a great weekend,

Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Lauren
