Hello Aspen families,
It has been a busy week in the Aspen classroom! This week we had a great time celebrating Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year. Next week we will be studying and learning all about a variety of musical instruments.
This week in circle time we read the books Ten in the Bed, You Get What You Get, Valentine Mice, Big Hugs Little Hugs and Only One You. Throughout the week the children practiced counting to 20 by clapping each number, which they have really been enthusiastic about! The children helped to create rules and boundaries for how to work and play in the centers, so now have most of the centers have a numbered card identifying how many friends can work in that center at one time. The numbered cards show the numeral as well as corresponding dots so that the children can simultaneously work on number recognition. The children also counted and sorted hearts based on size for our Valentine’s Day group. Finally we worked on a fun math game, sorting number fish.
Activities for this week included the water table, the easel, ramps and rollers and cutting playdoh. The children also worked on a couple art projects this week, many of them made valentine’s to take home for parents or siblings, as well as stamp art. To celebrate Chinese New Year we used gold paint to write on red scrolls to celebrate the coming of spring and we colored dragon puppets!
Ms. Susan taught the children some new Valentine’s Day vocabulary in Spanish this week. They also continued to practice counting, vowel sounds and feelings. We welcomed Ms. Kathleen back from her trip to Tasmania this week! On Tuesday she brought her guitar to show the children how a string instrument makes music and shared some new animal sounds from Australian animals like the koala and the penguin. Then on Thursday we welcomed Ms. Joy, a local musician, into our classroom to show the children a violin, viola and cello. Each child got a chance to practice plucking the instruments and using a bow to play the violin.
Have a wonderful weekend, see you all next week!
Ms. Kate, Ms. Megan and Ms. Susie
