Hello Evergreen Families!
This week we began our new unit, farm to table. To start the conversation, the class was asked, “what is a farm?” “What grows on a farm?” The children discussed how there is more to a farm than just farm animals and learned that much of the food we eat is grown on a farm. We read books such as On the Farm, at the Market and Curious George: Farm to Table to learn how crops (plants) are first grown on a farm and harvested by a farmer, processed, and delivered to a farmer’s market or grocery store. The class also did a vegetable growing experiment, where we stuck a sweet potato and half a carrot in water and made predictions on what is going to happen over time. Many children predicted that another carrot or sweet potato would begin to grow. In pretend play, the children have the opportunity to be a farmer and create a farm on the felt board. The class is also using the blocks to build farms.
In science, the class continued to learn about the different food groups: fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy. The children have pictures of multiple different items from each group and sort it into the appropriate category. In High Scope math, the class continued the study of shapes by playing a game called, “I Spy Shapes.” In this game, the children looked for and named different shapes in the environment. The Z story this week talked about different feelings. The class learned that it is ok to have differences in opinions about things and how to work together to solve the problem so everyone can have a good time, despite differences.
Have a wonderful weekend!
