Dear River Families,
This week in River we continued studying simple machines, mountains and mountain animals! The children watched a short video clip of Planet Earth, Mountains. The children continued practicing their poems and wrote a journal entry with their costume idea. Your child’s poem and script are in your parent file! Each child made a “shekere” this week, a bright colored instrument resembling an egg shaker and a maraca. These instruments will be used during the spring performance!
This week the children learned about the Vaquita, a critically endangered marine mammal and we started a reading program to, “Read for the Vaquitas”. Every book = 1 point on our way to 100 points! Challenge books (at the discretion of parents and teachers) are worth 2 points. This reading program includes any books your child reads at home or at school! A paper to record these books will be sent home in your child’s reading bag on Friday. When we reach 100 points, we will “adopt” a Vaquita by donating money to research and conservation! Below I have attached an article about the Vaquitas and a link to the conservation website. I have been doing this reading program since I began teaching over 7 years ago and unfortunately there are only 30 left in the wild as of last month.
Ms. Emily worked with the children on designing their headdresses for their costumes. In our Jr. Great Book responding and creating poems. Math this week included working with number bonds 10-20. On Friday, the children enjoyed doing some fun St. Patrick’s day art!
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Ms. Stephanie
