We had a wonderful productive week at Forest!
This Week – We discussed signs of spring. We learned about animal babies born in spring, spring cleaning, migrating birds, budding trees and Forsythia bushes; as well as Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus, Hyacinth, Grape Hyacinth, Lily of the Valley and Bluebells. We went on a lovely spring walk on Thursday and were fortunate to see many of signs of spring peeking through our wet spring snow.
Science
Oviparous and Viviparous
We learned the difference between an oviparous animal – an animal producing young by means of eggs that are hatched after they have been laid by the parent – and viviparous animals – live young that have developed inside the body of the parent.
Parts of an egg
We cracked open a chicken egg and were able to identify the shell, inner and outer membrane, albumen and the chalaza. The children got a kick out of this messy science lesson!
Art
We made beautiful crayon resist with watercolor eggs inspired by Carl Peter Faberge.
Faberge was a was a Russian jeweler best known for the famous Faberge eggs made in the style of genuine Easter eggs but using precious metals and gemstones rather than more mundane materials for Russian aristocats and royals.
I shared the story of a man who recently purchased a heap of scrap metal to be melted and found a small golden egg about the size of a cupcake. The man was hoping to sell his egg for $500 dollars but was unsuccessful. Frustrated he decided to dig a little deeper and googled the name inscribed on the egg to discover the egg was the missing Third Imperial Easter Egg worth $33 million dollars! What a find!
