Hello Forest Families!
We had another wonderful (and sunny) week again, and cannot believe that we are already approaching the 4th week of the school year!
This week’s focus was learning about apples.
We learned:
- Johnny Appleseed was responsible for helping to positively change the topography of many US areas of land by planting apple trees.
- Johnny Appleseed was kind to the earth, animals, and other people whom he met. Ways that we can live his legacy include being gentle, mindful, and thoughtful towards trees and people too.
- The main parts of an apple are the: stem, core, skin, seeds, stalk.
- Apples go through a life cycle: seed, sapling, sprout, blossom, apple
- Apples do not just have to be eaten raw. Apples can be cooked into different desserts and dishes such as pies, breads, and cider.
- Apples are signs of fall, because they blossom over the course of spring-summer and can be harvested during autumn months.
- The wind carries seeds to different geographical areas, in order for more trees to grow, blossom and yield more apples.
- Chlorophyll is responsible for the changing colors of leaves during autumn. When chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the leaf appears yellow, red or orange. Other chemical changes also cause this color change.
- Apples are sold in measurements called bushels, pecks and half-pecks. We learned about what these sizes look like.
- Fall leaf nature walk: We took a walk around the neighborhood, looking for changes in leaves, and observed other signs of the changing seasons.
Science- This week the children continued their magnetic and non-magnetic lessons, and were introduced to the elements of earth, air, and water.
Spanish- the children continued learning about colors in Spanish
Art- Children learned about Henri Matisse and created their own geometric abstract pictures. They ended their unit on lines, and began their unit on shapes.
A peek into next week- Farmer’s Market, Fall harvest
If you have not already, please bring in a family photograph for our class book. Thank you.
