Dear River Families,

We had another busy week in Kindergarten!  We began our unit on apples and autumn! Centers this week included exploring fall leaves and writing about them in our journals, as well as learning how to write and read some new fall words. Each group met with me for a special lesson on “reading strategies” and the children worked with a pair to build sight words with magnetic letters and the movable alphabet.  The class read the book, “I Love School,” and made a writing and illustration about something they like at school as a part of our Being a Writer program. In Math this week we matched objects to numbers, continued working on writing numbers and introduced reading and making graphs. We also worked on writing numbers correctly.

We did all things apples this week! We dissected an apple and identified all the different parts including the skin, flesh, core, stem and seeds. The children also got to make applesauce as a class. For our peace lesson this week, the children worked on letting their love light shine and recognizing when their love light is not shining. The children also enjoyed the story, “Good People Everywhere,” and recognized people in their life that give kindness to them in different ways. The children have been enjoying conversation cards. This is where I give each pair a picture of something and they make up a story about what is happening, what happens next and how it ends. This is a great oral language activity!

Please return book bags (with books inside), folders and backpacks every Monday! Pattern books can easily be memorized so it is important to work with your child on this. Sight words and short words (consonant-vowel-consonant “cvc” ex. cat) can be decoded and the other words can be inferred using the illustrations. Please help them by asking them to identify sight words, “decode” not guess and point to every word while reading. To decode, I ask the children to identify the letter sounds and then slide. If you have any questions about this, feel free to ask me for more information! Again, our first field trip will be in the middle of October to Isabelle Farms Pumpkin Patch, I would love 2-3 volunteers for this, please contact me kindergarten@treehouselearning.com if you are interested. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Ms. Lauren and Ms. Andrea
