January 17

Dear Evergreen Families,

This week we continued to explore Asia, focusing more on China. Chinese New Year is approaching and we are learning how it is celebrated. We have also been reading books about Chinese cuisine in preparation for our restaurant centers which will be opening next week.

We have been reading a lot of books about different restaurants and cuisines, as well as different manners when we eat at restaurants. This helped the children get ready as we transition our classroom into a Restaurant Theme.

The restaurant centers will be a pizzeria, a sit down Asian food restaurant, an American sandwich and ice cream shop. The children will play the roles of customers, cooks, cashiers, hostess, dishwashers, and waiters.

For small groups, the children experienced how to write Chinese Calligraphy. They noticed that they don’t have alphabets but characters. The children wrote mountain, small, river and sun in Chinese characters. Another small group activity was making Cherry blossom art. It was read to them that these trees are commonly found in Asia, especially in China, Japan and Korea. The children used varieties of pink tissue paper, crumpled and glued them on a printed branch. The last group played the game “I have, who has” using restaurant photo cards.

On Friday, Ms. Melissa came for the children’s art lesson and they made fishballs using markers, paint and chalk pastels.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Cezanne, Ms. Brenda, Ms. Maunjaree and Ms. Megan
