Dear Forest families,
This week we continued to study our solar system, we talked about our eight planets and the sun being our main focus as it’s a very important source of energy for life on earth. We discussed what would happen if we traveled to outer space? What gear astronauts wear? Do you float or walk in space? Some children’s responses were that you need to take off in a space shuttle in order to get to space, so we found videos on Kids NASA and watched space shuttles lift off. Many of the children mentioned how dark it was out in space and that the earth is round, which led us to talk about the shapes we see in our solar system as well as the infinite amount of stars that are visible from the space shuttle and here on our own planet earth appearing as luminous points in the sky.
During circle time the children sang multiple songs about space including “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” “Mr. Golden Sun,” and “Countdown to Blast Off” which was a class favorite! Many of the children became interested in meteors as well and brought up the fact that Earth was struck by the asteroid leading to mass extinction of the dinosaurs which will be one of our themes for next month. The children are excited to learn more about dinosaurs!
