Good afternoon Cedar families,

This week Dogwood and Cedar learned about winter animals.  The children talked about animals sleeping and hiding during the winter.  The children sang different versions of songs they already know such as “The Bears are Marching,” and “There’s a Penguin in the Snow.”  The children also sang “Are you Sleeping?,” “Jingle Bells,” and “Frosty, the Snowman.”  The children read Little Owl Lost, I am a Bunny, Who is Hiding in the Snow?, The Penguin Chick, and Polar Bears are Wild! 

The children worked on their large motor skills when bear walking, waddling like penguins, and hopping like bunnies.  The children also tried yoga, downward dog and Shraavana still seem to be the favorite poses.

Practical life skills were used when children scooped stars and small balls, practiced matching mittens by their color, and folding washcloths.  The children had the first opportunities of the winter to practice putting mittens on their hands and keeping them on to keep their hands warm outside. 

During art, the children made animal footprints with paint, used white paint on black paper, and used crayons on sandpaper.  The children felt the rough sandpaper and explored what it did to the crayons when they colored on it.  The children also explored with snow, play dough, and ribbons in the sensory table.

During music with Ms. Kathleen the children read and sang Frosty, the Snowman.  The children also used shaker eggs to touch various body parts, danced with scarves, and listened to animal sounds. 

Winter is here! Remember that snow boots are not allowed in the classroom. Please make sure your child has a pair of shoes to wear in the classroom. Also, please label hats, coats, mittens, boots, and snow pants.
