Good afternoon Evergreen families!
This week in Evergreen the children learned about their bodies, and were introduced to how healthy foods and exercise can fuel their bodies, and build strong muscles. The children have enjoyed many stories about how the inside of their body works, and how their body can move using bones and muscles. They have explored many activities to discover why a food is healthy (nutrients) or unhealthy (too much sugar). This week many children have noticed the foods they eat at Treehouse, and at home, are the healthy foods they are learning about. They are learning new vocabulary like nutrients, vitamins, proteins, and moderation. It’s ok to eat your favorite, sugary treats, but eat them in moderation.
This week the children worked on new practical life activities developing motor control and coordination. They are practicing spooning objects one at a time, or using tongs to transfer objects from one container to another. They are exploring markers to learn how to put caps on tightly, in preparation for making valentines. They are strengthening hand muscles using a spray bottle to blend the marker coloring, and practicing coordination with eye droppers to apply water color paint to coffee filters. These activities also help them learn how to take turns, and how to occupy their time as they wait patiently for their turn with that work.
In literacy, the children are working on name recognition and identifying letters in their name. Vocabulary associated with letters draws their attention to the shapes and lines that form the letter, such as curves, circles, short lines, long lines, and diagonal lines.
In math, the Evergreen students are having sensory experiences with playdoh, as they make button pizzas. They are exploring storytelling as they decide who they will make a pizza for, and practicing counting as they count out buttons for the food items that will go on the pizza. They are learning fractions as they figure out how many pieces of pizza they need to cut for the children in their math group.
During the month of February, the theme will teach the children how to celebrate differences. It will involve multicultural lessons about children and families around the world.
Have a great weekend!
The Evergreen Team,
Ms. Riann, Ms. Lindsey, Ms. Suzan, Ms. Meghan, and Ms. Becky
