Hello Evergreen Families

This week we continued the discussion about what diversity means.  While extending the discussion with an example of Elmer by David McKee which is about an elephant who doesn’t look like the other elephants. This led us to talking about how we are unique and compared things that were the same and different. The children talked about how it is ok to be different, and how that makes us unique.  In literacy, they created their own multi-colored Elmer. We incorporated the “Elmer” theme in a new math extension that involved number recognition.

In High Scope math, the children continued to learn about shapes and their properties.  The children reached into a bag filled with shapes, chose one, described its properties and then named the shape.  In science, we had an opportunity to replant one of the classroom plants while examining the roots and stem.  This brought on a lively discussion about what is needed to grow a plant.  This is the time of the year that we see some of the early concepts we talked about in the fall come back around and the children are able to make real-life connections.  It’s fun to watch this unfold!

Have a great weekend.
