April 20

Hello Evergreen Families!

This week we continued our study of taking care of the earth.  The children learned about Earth Day (this Sunday), and different things we can do to help take care of, and keep our earth clean.  The children had wonderful ideas on how to keep the earth clean, such as picking up trash off the ground, giving away old toys instead of throwing them out, and reusing or recycling materials to make new items.

In science, the class sorted out broken crayons, soaked the broken crayons in water overnight, and then removed the paper so that the crayons could be re-melted and re-molded to make new crayons.   The children enjoyed making new, multi-colored crayons.  Each child will be bringing home a homemade crayon!

In literacy, the children repurposed paper bags to make books.  In writing, the letter Zz was introduced and the students practiced writing the letter and learning the letter sound.  In HighScope math, the students used shapes to make people.

In continuing to learn about the earth, in art, the children used brown, green, and blue paint to make their own interpretations of how the earth looks.

As the class is starting to get ready to transition to the Forest room, The 4-year-olds had a lesson on how to apply sunscreen to themselves safely and will begin applying their own sunscreen moving forth – with our help of course!

Next week, the class will be making birdfeeders out of recycled materials.  Please bring in a clean, recyclable carton, such as a milk, cream, or orange juice container for your child to use.

Have a great weekend!
