Dear Aspen families,

This week in our classroom we discussed the topic of kindness, respect for each other, and celebrated our uniqueness in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.  One activity the children participated in was to enlighten them on diversity. The children were given paper plates and provided with paint that resembled different skin tones. The next day, they were given pictures of eyes, mouths, and noses of various colors to glue onto their paper plates. It was interesting to see how the children chose to glue eyes, mouths, and noses of colors other than their own. The teachers also emphasized how we are all the same on the inside regardless of our physicality. When the children were asked about what kindness means to them, they discussed the importance of taking turns, saying please and thank you, as well as checking on a classmate if they are hurt. This project tied into our theme this month: learning about the human body!

We also read lots of books about diversity, including, I am Martin Luther King, Jr by Brad Meltzer and Your Skin and Mine by Paul Showers.

In music class, Ms. Amelia read a children’s biography about MLK Jr. and taught the children a song called “We Shall Overcome.”
